I think the emotion this painting evokes is very powerful. It feels like there's really someone there looking back at you. The facial expression in the mouth, the sadness and intensity in the eyes keep the viewer staring and wondering who is this person.

The choice of strong yellow highlights on the major portion of the face contrasting with the muted colors and shadows make this portrait come alive. The slightly distorted pull of the face to the right and widening of the head make it more visually interesting.

The only thing I would say jars me a little bit is the ear on the right side. The shift in color palette causes me to wonder if you were going to alter the coloring altogether, or if this was for effect.
